Paragon Machine Works is the (not so) behind-the-scenes machine shop of many small and large frame builders. And to celebrate its 40th anniversary, it just announced a new, beautifully designed, special-edition multitool.

It all started with a single manually operated lathe and mill in Mark Norstad’s (MTB Hall of Fame Inductee, 2017) parents’ basement in Marin County. That was 40 years ago. Now, Paragon Machine Works (PMW) has grown and operates out of an 8,000-square-foot facility in Richmond, Calif.

In the 40 years since, PMW has been a force and a leader in frame-building technology and stocks a wide variety of bike frame-building components in titanium, steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.

The Limited Edition 40th Anniversary Multi-Tool/Bottle Opener (part #BT0040) will cost $200 and is designed and manufactured in Richmond. PMW built this tool to celebrate the employees, customers, family, and friends who helped it reach the 40-year milestone.

The tool is made from 6/4 titanium, and the end of each crossbone holds one of the included bits. You’ll find M4, M5, M6, and T25 in the box, and there are spots in the box for the storage of extra bits. The back of the tool is engraved with “PMW,” “1983 2023,” and “40 YEARS.”

Each tool is sold as a six-piece set, has been given a number, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.

The Special Box

Each one of the tools also comes in a hand-sanded and oiled wooden box. The boxes are made on one of PMW’s mills from locally sourced materials.

You can choose what wood your box will be made from a surprisingly large selection. Choose from:

  • Cherry
  • Live oak
  • White oak
  • Red oak
  • Red wood
  • Douglas fir
  • Hickory
  • Walnut
  • Mixed

PMW says that it will “do our best to accommodate your selection of wood variety. If it is out of stock, we will substitute in a different, stunning varietal. Thank you for your understanding.”

To care for the box, PMW suggests occasionally applying wood oil to refresh and protect it.
